SFA Elliott College of Fine Arts Dean's Circle announces 2023 award recipients

The Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts Dean's Circle at Stephen F. Austin State University will recognize six students during the presentation of the annual Dean's Awards at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 28, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches. Megan Bynum, art major from Brownwood; Stoney Shelton, music major from Paris, Texas; Constantina Alexandrides, music major from Fort Worth; Kiya Green, theatre major from Waxahachie; Izabel "Bella" Perez, art major from Waco; and Shanee Cody, art major from Cooper, were selected by the faculty of their respective schools on the basis of their potential to further develop their artistic goals and serve as role models for other students, according to Dr. Gary Wurtz, dean of the Elliott College of Fine Arts.

SFA kinesiology students take first and second place at Texas conference, have sights set on national competition

Students in Stephen F. Austin State University's Department of Kinesiology and Health Science took home several accolades during the 2023 Texas chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine's conference in February, including first- and second-place finishes in an academic challenge and a finalist position in a poster contest. These wins earned the students spots at the ACSM's national competition slated for later this year in Denver. Twenty-four students from SFA's James I. Perkins College of Education attended the event in Waco.

Stephen F. Austin State University celebrated the achievements of more than 900 students during its end-of-fall commencement ceremony held Dec. 10 in Johnson Coliseum. Degrees awarded include 822 bachelor's, 149 master's and two doctoral degrees.

Stephen F. Austin State University recognized the outstanding academic achievements of a select number of students by naming 1,500 to the Dean's List for fall 2022. To qualify for the Dean's List at SFA, the student must have earned a semester GPA over 3.5 in 12 or more semester hours while a full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate student.

Stephen F. Austin State University recognized the outstanding academic achievements of a select number of students by naming 923 to the President's Honor Roll for fall 2022. To qualify for the President's Honor Roll at SFA, the student must have earned a 4.0 semester GPA in 12 or more semester hours while a full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate student.

Omicron Delta Kappa Celebrates New Members

Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, welcomed 1,085 new initiates from 45 universities during November 2022. Students initiated into the Society must be sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate/professional students in the top 35% of their class, demonstrate leadership experience in at least one of the five pillars, and embrace the ODK ideals. Fewer than five percent of students on a campus are invited to join each year.

'Stars of Tomorrow' program features SFA Concerto/Aria Competition winners

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Symphony Orchestra at Stephen F. Austin State University will showcase the 2022 SFA Concerto/Aria Competition winners in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus. This year's winning "Stars of Tomorrow" are Oliver Yan, Hong Kong graduate student, conductor; Logan Dooley, Texarkana senior, baritone; Ozge Serceler, Eskisehir, Turkey, graduate student, cello; Quentin Fisher, Roanoke, Virginia, senior, French horn; and Peyton Joffre, Carrollton junior, saxophone. Winners are given an opportunity to perform a solo work with the SFA Symphony Orchestra, according to Dr. Gregory Grabowski, director of orchestral activities at SFA.

SFA business student, Mattress Firm reap benefits of tuition reimbursement

At age 16, Nicholas Mobley of Tomball was the youngest employee ever hired by Mattress Firm. Two years later, the company is investing in Mobley's general business degree from Stephen F. Austin State University's Rusche College of Business. "Though the minimum age requirement for the job at Mattress Firm was 18 years old, the manager in the north Houston district, Patricia Bedoya, told me the self-paced video interview I sent was the best out of a hundred applications," said Mobley, now an SFA junior.

SFA forestry student honors U.S. military veterans with Honor Flight San Diego

Brandon Nance, a Stephen F. Austin State University junior forestry major within the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, recently participated in Honor Flight San Diego, escorting military veterans to Washington, D.C., to tour memorials honoring their service. Honor Flight San Diego is a nonprofit branch of the nationwide Honor Flight Network, which provides veterans who served during World War II through the Vietnam War with an all-expenses-paid trip to tour the nation's war memorials.

SFA students earn honors at Phi Beta Lambda national competition

Three students in Stephen F. Austin State University's Rusche College of Business placed in competitions held during the Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference at the end of June in Chicago. Preston Pennington-Sahs, an economics senior from Frisco, earned first place in the macroeconomics category; Martarosa Velazquez of Lufkin, who graduated in May with a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing, earned seventh place in the marketing analysis and decision-making category; and Kristen Baker, a finance junior from Nacogdoches, earned 10th place in the marketing concepts category.

Omicron Delta Kappa Celebrates Circle Presidents

Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, celebrates students who are serving as circle (chapter) presidents. Students who serve as circle presidents are leaders amongst leaders. Members of ODK must be sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate/professional students in the top 35% of their class and embrace the Society's ideals. They also must demonstrate leadership experience in at least one of the five pillars of campus life celebrated by ODK: academics and research, athletics, service to campus and community, communications, and creative and performing arts. Fewer than five percent of students on a campus are invited to join each year.

SFA student receives Tony Houseman Conservation Legacy Award

Amber Borel, a sophomore forestry major at Stephen F. Austin State University, was awarded the 2022 Tony Houseman Conservation Legacy Award, recognizing her service to others and dedication to advancing the field of conservation. The annual award, presented by Higher Calling Wildlife, a conservation-based publication, celebrates the legacy of Tony Houseman, an East Texas businessman known for his philanthropy and wildlife conservation advocacy.

SFA celebrates August 2022 graduation candidates

Stephen F. Austin State University celebrated the achievements of more than 350 students during its end-of-summer commencement ceremony held Aug. 6 in Johnson Coliseum. Degrees awarded include 242 bachelor's, 107 master's and four doctoral degrees. Approximately 57 students graduated with honors, including 22 cum laude, 23 magna cum laude and 12 summa cum laude. Seven students graduated with the university scholar designation.
